I was loading some samples from an excellent Wave Alchemy synth drums sample library that I own when I noticed that the Kontakt and EXS instrument files were recognized by HALion and displayed as special green-colored icons showing "NKI" and "EXS," respectively.
Has HALion always been able to read Kontakt and EXS instruments? I'm using HALion 7 but have owned HALion since version 4. I never tried loading Kontakt and EXS instruments before because I had never seen or read anything to suggest this is possible.
This is great. I can now use the excellent Autosampler plugin in Logic to sample some of my hardware synths that do not feature patch storage. I'm always coming up with cool sounds and then leaving the synth on the same settings for weeks because I don't want to lose the patch. But this way I can autosample the sounds and move on. What's best is that Autosampler's auto-looping works amazingly well and takes all of the drudgery out of looping sustaining sounds.
I have never liked Kontakt and prefer to use HALion. The only reason I've stuck with Kontakt is because I had converted my large custom EXS library to it probably 20 years ago. But now I can load all of those sounds into HALion. Nice!
Of course, I don't think any of the copy-protected Kontakt instruments that I own will load into HALion. And that's fine. I'll just grit my teeth and keep using Kontakt as a glorified sample player for those libraries.
